Posset is a Milk Drink, Taken at night to help with relaxation. Posset was used often in medieval times, and this recipe dates to the 14th Century.

1 cup Milk

Grated Nutmeg or 1 tsp. Nutmeg Spice Powder

Heat the milk in a pan. As it boils, pour it carefully into a mug (you may want to wear an oven mitt)

Grate a quarter of a whole nutmeg, or sprinkle the powdered spice over the milk; wait about 30 seconds, then stir the nutmeg into the milk.

Sip Slowly and Enjoy!

If You do not drink cow’s milk, You could try this with goats milk, maybe almond milk or coconut milk, but I’m not sure how it would taste and if the benefits would be as effective

This is probably My first Valentine’s Day where I haven’t created some traditional items I share with other’s every Valentine’s Day. Things have just been too hectic and I’ve been pre-occupied with things that are more important, so I thought I would try and share a little love on here. I don’t want cupid to fire me. ;)

Here is a recipe for Sweeheart’s Aphrodisiac Herbal Tea

4 cups distilled or purified water
1/4 cup red hibiscus flowers
2 tablespoons lemongrass or lemon balm
2 tablespoons rosehips
1/4 cup rose petals
peel of 1 medium orange cut into slices
Sweetener of Your Choice (I use honey)

In a medium saucepot, bring the water to a boil, then remove from heat. Add all ingredients except sweetener, cover and all mixture to steep for about 45 minutes until very deep red.

Strain, add sweetener to taste, and stir to blend. Pour into medium sized pitcher, chill for a couple of hours and serve. Store refrigerated, covered for 2 days.

In the past, my traditions have included, Chocolate-Cherry heart shapped truffles and Flower Bouquets, made from carnations in the shape of a heart. I will try to find pictures of them both and post them below. I just remembered I have some vintage valentine cards I would like to share here, but will probably have to scan and post them tomorrow.

Don’t forget to let other’s know you love them, not only on Valentine’s Day, but every day you can!

Note: I use dried rose petals from an herbal company, they are organic and have no pesticide, this still makes a great tea even without the rose petals

Nereids Bath Salts are an ultra moisturizing blend that contains solar evaporated sea salts from the costal region of California, Pink Himalayan Sea Salts, Epsom Salts and premium fragrance oil with top notes of ocean mist, sea moss, and cyclamen. Followed by middle notes of geranium flower, and coriander seed on base notes of white cedar wood and earthy vetiver.

You receive 16 ounces of bath salts packaged in an up cycled mason jar. I painted the jar lid to add a rustic appeal, and hand stamped the top with a mermaid in metallic green paint. The jar can be used as a pin cushion and or storage jar. The pictures show some other uses. Store your beach treasures, sewing notions or just about anything. The padded top is also scented to match the bath salts and the inside of the lid contains a little bit of trivia about the Nereides in Greek Mythology

The oyster shell scoop, that was found on a sunny Florida beach is included. The other accessories in the photos are not included. Click on the photo to get to my Etsy shop.

THE NEREIDES (or Nereids) were fifty Haliad Nymphs or goddesses of the sea. They were the patrons of sailors and fishermen, who came to the aid of men in distress, and goddesses who had in their care the sea’s rich bounty. Individually they also represented various facets of the sea, from salty brine, to foam, sand, rocky shores, waves and currents, in addition to the various skills possessed by seamen.

Here I will be posting things I’m nostalgic for…most of them were “discontinued for one reason or the other. Some you can still find on web sites like ebay…enjoy and feel free to add comments on the items….did you use them? What did you think of the product? What are you nostalgic for?

My first Item is Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo…The original formula…none of the new ones smell like this.

I not only loved the earthy, herbal scent, but also the green color, and the commercials, ads, the lady with the long blonde hair bathing in a tranquil pool with flowers, the crown of flowers that adorned her locks, and all the little animals and critters around her…I would imagine myself as that lady in that pool any time I washed my hair with the shampoo…if you’ve seen pictures of me when I was younger…you know my hair was very pretty. I loved that fragrance remained on my hair and I could be reminded of the tranquility of the commercial through out days and nights.

A long time ago I read the reasons why this shampoo was discontinued, but can’t remember why…so I will have to do a little more research on the subject. So many people miss this shampoo, you can find all kinds of web sites where people are asking for it to be brought back. I’ve read that the vermont country store has a reproduction of this shampoo, but I have a feeling it is very expensive.

Over the years I have found two shampoos that smell just like the original herbal essence…one I can no longer find. The second is by a company called “Vanart” Herbal essence for all hair types

Many of the local stores have small sections with items that cater to the hispanic population, and it’s in these small sections I have found the Vanart brand. They used to have it at “sweet bay” but I haven’t seen it there in awhile…the other day I was very happy to find it in walmart. I paid like 4.95 for 32 ounce bottle. I feel transformed to that magical time in the 70′s the fragrance is so earthy and clean unlike so many other shampoos I smell that seem to have the same sweet, fruity almost sickly smell…and it’s the same pretty green color, with a thick luxurious texture. If you loved the Original Clairol Herbal Essence…you will be very happy with the Vanart brand.

I also just read they sell it at kmart….here is a picture of what it looks like :)

It’s a little late in the month, but after some consideration I decided to devote this month to the Passion Flower. Easter is coming and  though I did not know this, many associate the scarlet passion flower with Jesus Christ..quite fitting because at easter we not only remember his death but celebrate his resurection.

Each flower has 5 white petals and 5 sepals that vary in color from magenta to blue. According to folklore, passionflower got its name because its corona resembles the crown of thorns worn by Jesus during the crucifixion.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Spanish Christian missionaries adopted the unique physical structures of this plant, particularly the numbers of its various flower parts, as symbols of the last days of Jesus and especially his crucifixion:

The pointed tips of the leaves were taken to represent the Holy Lance

The tendrils represent the whips used in the flaggellation of Christ

The ten petals and sepal represent the ten faithful apostles (excluding  St. Peter the denier and Judas Iscariot the betrayer.)

The flower’s radial filaments, which can number more than a hundred and vary from flower to flower, represent the crown of thorns.

The  chalice shaped ovary with its receptacle  represents a hammer or the Holy Grail

The 3  stigmas  represent the 3  nails and the 5  anthers  below them the 5  wounds(four by the nails and one by the lance).

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) was used traditionally in the Americas and later in Europe as a “calming” herb for anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and hysteria. It is still used today to treat anxiety and insomnia. Although scientists aren’t sure, it is believed that passionflower works by increasing levels of a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA lowers the activity of some brain cells, making you more relaxed.

Before Making and adding Shea Butter Body Whip to My Etsy store I would like to share some information about the benefits of Shea Butter and a link to my favorite supply company Mountain Rose Herbs

Shea Butter is derived from the pressed nuts of the karite tree.  In Africa, shea butter is used for cooking oil, as a water proofing wax, for hairdressing and for candle-making; and also as an ingredient of medicinal ointments.

Shea Butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F.  Vitamins A and E help maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy.  They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin. They help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines.  Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and rejuvenator. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair.

The Shea Butter  in my products is hand harvested, certified organic, and expeller pressed/unrefined.

En: A flowering Lemon verbena, Aloysia triphyl...

Image via Wikipedia

Lavender works well in the treatment of acne, eczema, dermatitis, fungus, burns and wounds. it makes a refreshing astringent as well as an effective skin moisturizer. It can alleviate aches, pains and swelling from arthritis, injury, headache and other maladies.

Lavender and Sage are herbs that both have properties that are beneficial to the skin. They can be used in herbal or essential oil form.

Sage can help with aging of the skin and dandruff. Mint soothes skin, relieves itching and is also good for pimples. Its anti pruritic properties can be used for treating bites of insects like mosquitoes, honey-bees, hornets, wasps, gnats etc.
Lemon Verbena is used to moisturize the skin and is also good for sunburn.

You can find an herbal body scrub in my etsy shop that contains all of these ingredients.
